Selection Process of the Program
There was quite a unique process for the determination of eligibility and the selection of the families in the program.
The eligibility criteria
- The family should be living in Sacramento County in California
- There should be minimum one child in the family whose age is between 0 to 5 years
- The family or the household belongs in the low-income category
- The child should be living with the family 50% of the time
All those families who have met the criteria applied in the program, and out of those 200 families, were selected by the authority via a lottery system. The purpose of this unique selection method was to maintain the motive of the program and also collect accurate data. As it was a random selection, it was fair to all the applicants.
This is also a preventive measure by the state government, as due to a lack of financial stability, many families break up, and the children are then sent to foster care. Although in foster care the children are well looked upon, nothing can beat the environment of one’s own family. This affects the child and their parents too.
So by providing them with these financial aids, the government aims to lessen the need for foster care and help the child develop and grow while remaining in their own family. The scheme is, as of now, limited to the selected 200 families, but if it goes well, then there are chances of more guaranteed income programs in the coming years.
